Biography

ABU IDDRIS, is a gifted and daring “street made” writer and filmmaker who found and turned his passion into a profession through practical experiments and experiences on the job. He started from stand-up comedy to stage productions and then into film productions, he has worked on over 20 films and theatre productions combined, playing different roles at a time, WRITER, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, SCRIPT SUPERVISOR , DIRECTOR , PRODUCER, CINEMATOGRAPHER etc.

He passed through a short course in filmmaking and won the best “Film Directing student” of the YEAR. Driven by self motivation to challenge himself , he made a few  shorts and FEATURES, while learning more on the job and from the universe whenever and however possible. The world as a set, everyday events as scenes, people as characters, his eyes as the camera and himself as the DIRECTOR, and so he learns on the go in everyday life. Inspired by SIR ALFRED HITCHCOCK’s works “#the cine-god” was born.

Abu Iddris focused on the horror thriller genres, studied suspense from watching lots of horror / thriller films. He got even crazier when he discovered his natural ability of being able to think of possible ways of achieving some realistic practical Illusions. He almost ventured into the business of magic performances but reminded himself of where he belonged, also knowing that filmmaking is another form of magic, he was encouraged to stick to films and attempt all genres that employ illusions, hence the “Cine-illusionist” today. what ever the idea is, how ever impossible it may see, if it is written and can be described, then Abu Iddris can pull it off practically with less or no visual effects employed.

Born in Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region of Ghana to a commercial driver and a trader, Iddris started writing for film in 2005 after secondary school where he was forced to study Building & Construction- a course he had absolute no interest in. The vicissitudes of life compelled him to take a different path from what he wanted, leading him to the Accra Technical University to further what he had studied in High School. While there he joined a theatre group and started acting on stage alongside writing and directing plays. Gradually, his passion for the craft became profound. After several productions across the length and breadth of the capital, he inched ahead and started writing for screen without any prior knowledge of the rudiments involved in screen writing and directing. Lacking the finances to see his projects through post-production forced him to apply what was known to him and what he would learn in the process to bring them to fruition. This explains what makes him adept at other film related departments such as cinematography, editing, VFX and lighting. Many became good filmmakers through school, but Iddris aka thecinegod believes he is this good at what he does because he learnt from the best, i.e. EXPERIENCE!

In 2012 , Iddris; along with graduates from leading film schools like NAFTI, had the very rare opportunity to work with Sparrows Productions as Assistant Director to a gallant amongst contemporary filmmakers in Ghana-Shirley Frimpong-Manso. The responsibility of dealing with a huge cast of mostly A-list actors and crew, alongside acting as the link between them and the Director, was not only challenging but extremely taxing. While there he worked on the following productions: Contract (feature film), Tenants season 1&2 (series), Peeps season 02 (series), Adams Apples season 02 (series), Potomanto (feature film), Rebecca (feature film) all in the capacity of Assistant Director. Having amassed a repertoire of experience and knowledge about filmmaking following years of hustle on the job, he registered and started running his own production company under the name Cine-god Studios.

He found and registered CINE-GOD Studios, collaborated with a few productions houses on a few productions, he organised a few online and practical workshops on filmmaking, specifically ACTING FOR SCREEN and LIGHTING IN FILM, he worked on a few features films as THE WRITER, DIRECTOR, co writer and Producer on some. These include HEAVEN CAN WAIT, HASHTAG, TERMINUS, THE AGENCY.

Iddris’ biggest challenge from the beginning of this journey has been lack of funding for his projects. This is what has compelled him to multi-task on these projects. With just about one tenth of what is needed, the outcome of his works have always had audiences drop their jaws in cinemas amidst thunderous applauds, not to mention numerous recognitions and award nominations.

My Journey to Becoming a Filmmaker. In the beginning, I had nothing but a passion that I couldn't quite name. I was drawn to the world of filmmaking like a magnet, spending hours watching movies and dreaming of being part of them. As I delved deeper, my desire to create grew stronger. I started making short films, experimenting with different techniques, and learning from my mistakes. The journey wasn't easy, but the excitement I felt every time I thought about filmmaking kept me going. And now, after all these years, everything makes sense. I'm just getting started, and I know that the best is yet to come. My Philosophy I believe that success in any field requires an undying love for the craft. When you're passionate about what you do, the struggles become worth it, and the journey becomes enjoyable. That's how I know that anybody can succeed if they're willing to put in the work and follow their heart. -Abu Iddris
